Since doughnuts are a fairly inexpensive treat, there isn't a lot of motivation to make your own at home. Letting the bakeries do the work (and the cleanup) sounds like a much better idea. But if you are less like Homer Simpson and would prefer a classier version of the typical doughnut, we think this doughnut macaron from Raspberri Cupcakes will fit the bill. It's adorable, and you'll probably save yourself a few calories if you indulge in this instead of the typical fried version. But if you are a more of a traditionalist and you want to bake, we suggest the recipe below.
Maple-bacon doughnuts
Yields 10
Ingredients:
•1 batch quick fried doughnuts
•1-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
•1 teaspoon pure maple extract
•2-3 tablespoons milk
•Pinch of cinnamon
•5 strips fried bacon, crumbled
Directions:
1.Make the doughnuts according to the recipe, but do not coat in the sugar mixture. Let cool.
2.Whisk together the confectioners' sugar, maple extract, two tablespoons of milk and cinnamon. If glaze is too thick, add the remaining tablespoon of milk. (The glaze should be thick enough so that it won't run off the top of the doughnuts.)
3.Dip one side of the cooled doughnuts into the glaze and place upright on a wire rack. Immediately sprinkle with bacon crumbles.
4.Let glaze set and enjoy
